The Municipal Police are uniformed local Police. If you do get stopped and feel you’ve done nothing wrong, ask the officer to write a ticket and tell him you will go with him to the police station to pay it. If your infraction is minimum, they will usually not want to take the time to do this. Municipal police use light blue & white cars.
The State Judicial Police are part of the State Attorney General’s office and they are responsible for investigating crimes and carrying out arrest warrants. These police do not wear uniforms and they drive unmarked cars or motorcycles.
The Federal Highway Police monitor traffic and proper vehicle documents. They are Federal uniformed police officers and drive black and white cars. They investigate accidents on Federal Highways and supervise ports and railroads. These policemen also verify that all cargo vehicles comply with transportation regulations and those vehicles and their drivers have the proper permits and licenses to transport the specific goods being transported.
The Judicial Federal Police are part of the Federal Attorney General’s Office and investigate crimes contained in the Federal Penal Code. These officials are not uniformed and operate both on a national and interstate level.
The Public Treasury Police Department is in charge of verifying the legal entrance of merchandise and vehicles coming into México. They drive royal blue cars at the border. If you don’t stop when you receive a red light at the border crossing, then one of these cars may follow you and ask you to stop.
